Do you like yourself?
Sometimes we have the feeling that we don't like ourselves.
We may feel that way because of something that we have done in the past.
Are there some days that you don't like yourself?
Are there some days where you actually hate yourself?
How do you deal with the memories from a mistake you have made in the past?
I know these are difficult questions but I'd like to hear your ideas (either in Japanese or in English is fine)
Thank you very much

apologize
Good afternoon.
I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize.
I have been so busy at work that I have been neglecting a lot of things in my personal life.
I haven't been e-mailing a lot of my friends back in Canada nor have not been making a lot of comments to my friends MIXI blogs.
Also I haven't been making any English lessons recently.
But things have become a lot less busy at work and hopefully I will be able to go back to making regular posts and making some interesting English lessons on my blog!
Thank you for your understanding!
Sorry again.

Art Gallery
We went to see the Vermeer exhibition at the Roppongi art gallery. It's actually had only one piece painted by Vermeer. Which is not really that big of a disappointment because as we learned, from your only painted about 30 pieces of art in his entire lifetime!
This piece is on temporary loan to the Art Gallery from a museum in Amsterdam.
I was really impressed! There were so many different kinds of art on display there. And also, the art gallery itself is very beautiful. I took some pictures but they are still in the digital camera and my digital camera is at home.
So I should be able to put them up tomorrow.
If you have a chance to go and see the Vermeer exhibition I think it would be a nice afternoon out.

relaxing weekend
We had planned to go to the Vermeer exhibition but it was cold and raining and we just couldn’t seem to get out of bed. So we went down to a GREAT restaurant and had lunch/breakfast. It was great! The restaurant looked like a one I went to in Toronto. For awhile, I felt like I was back home.
Then we watched a movie called NOEL. It’s a very touching movie about Christmas time and 3 families separate (but related) stories. We had a good cry when the movie finished (and yes I do cry at movies, and No I’m not embarrassed). Then we went out from the warm apartment and got some food from the supermarket and I cooked dinner.
I cooked herb chicken with mashed potatoes and honey glazed carrots. I know it’s really easy but I wanted her to experience a real Canadian home cooked meal.
It was good!
A lazy, wonderful, loving, relaxing weekend.

disappointment here
Then we went up into the tower.
A little bit of a disappointment here.
The tower is under repair perhaps getting painted all the windows
are covered with a mesh so it's very difficult to take pictures.
Next we went to Mori tower in Roppongi.
I like Roppongi very much but not the night clubs.
It is a very upscale place kind of like Beverly Hills in the
United States.
We had a great dinner at a very nice restaurant Indian in Mori
Tower.
I was very surprised, it was not very expensive!
This is very rare for restaurants in Roppongi!

Book of World Records
The next day I met K and we first went to the Tokyo Tower.
This is my first time to go to the Tokyo Tower.
It's a very interesting place with lots of touristy things to do.
There is a wax museum, and the Guinness Book of World Records
Museum and a number of other things at the base of the tower.
We went into the wax museum, some of the statues were very lifelike
others... I couldn't tell who they were!

This weekend I was very busy!
First I met my coworker Jason from America and we spent the day
looking in electronic shops in Omiya.
Girls like shopping for clothes, I like shopping for electronics.
Then I met my friend LynN and she talked about her trip to Hawaii.
Her pictures were very beautiful!
And I hope she can send me one or two of them (hint hint.)
Then I went home and got a call from my new friend and new
coworker, to go to his place for a Monty Python drinking festival.
We had a lot of fun!

strange creature
They all said they saw this strange creature who flew over their houses in his shiny blue costume. We'll just have to see what happens next."
Villager Constantin Toader, 41, said: "He looked like Superman and was flying slowly at about 100 yards from the ground in a standing position. He didn't make any smoke or sound. Just cruising around."

our village
Police probe 'Superman' sighting
Police are investigating after villagers in Romania claimed to see a Superman-like figure flying through the sky.
Almost 20 villagers, from Gemeni, Mehedinti county, claim the UFO was wearing a shiny blue suit, just like Superman's.
Police officers took written statements from all of the witnesses and say they described the figure in the same way.
Local policeman Ion Anuta said: "We talked to people of different ages who are all reliable citizens in our village.

we woke to beautiful blue skies
The next day, we woke to beautiful blue skies and the clouds
playing among the mountaintops.
We then got on the bus(which didn't get stuck in a traffic
jam this time) to Chuzenji lake.
We saw a beautuful waterfall and then rode on a peddle boat shaped like a swan...
That was fun!
All in all we had a great time (even if we couldn't eat Honney flavored Soft cream)
playing among the mountaintops.

We try to have lunch
We try to have lunch at a small ramen shop near the temples.
But the service was so slow that we have leave before the our
order came.
Then we got on another bus. This bus also got stuck in a traffic jam.
The bus was so crowded! But we had fun anyway listening to music.
Finally we arrived on our hotel, actually it was a Ryokan.
It was very nice!
Dinner was fantastic and outside it had very romantic bath where
we spent time counting the stars.
They also had a very nice hot spring inside the hotel to.
The whole area and the baths smelled strongly of sulfur, like Kusatsu!

I can't show them
But we could both get a little nap on the train.
We got to Nikko and got on a bus going to the temples. The
bus got about half the way to the temple and we got stuck in
a traffic jam. So we decided to get out and walk.
We watched many dancers dancing the SORAN on the big stage.
Then we walked around some of the temples in the area. I took a lot of pictures but unfortunately my camera is having
some problems right now. So unfortunately I can't show them to
you... yet.

I had a great time
First off let me say that this trip was really fun!
I had a great time and saw many great things there.
Nikko is a wonderful place for either an overnight trip or a
day trip. There are so many things to see and do there!
This time we went to see some of the UNESCO world heritage sites
(the temples of Nikko), the lake, and the waterfall nearby.
We woke up very early (6:00am) and got on the train in Asakusa.
We were both very tired because neither of us slept well the
night before.

Bright side of the News: Dog Rescue
Surfer Joe Riopelle, left, pulls in Matt Smolenski and a rescued
dog near the Grand Haven, Mich., pier. Smolenski paddled out on
his surfboard to reach and rescue a struggling dog that had been
swept off a Lake Michigan pier(dock) by a big wave.
Smolenski said he grabbed the pooch's(another word for dog) collar
just as the exhausted, black-and-brown mixed breed stopped
dog-paddling.
'He put the dog up on his surfboard, and the dog rode the surfboard
in to shore,' said Royce Rodgers, an off-duty police officer.

15 minutes a day
2) 15 minutes a day is better than zero minutes a day: even if
you spend 15 minutes a day doing something as simple as listening
or reading, it will help your overall skill. Of course the longer
you study the better you get but... a little is better than nothing.
3) reward yourself: after studying stand up and look at what you've
done and feel good about it! Then reward yourself with something
a little special, it can be as simple as a cookie or a nice warm
bath. Why is this such an effective technique? If you can link
the feelings of studying English with the feelings of pleasure
and a feeling of accomplishment wound you will be more likely
to study in the future.

My students often ask
My students often ask "Omnicron Sensei, what is the best
way for me to improve my English."
This is not an easy question to answer.
However I would like to give some hints of how to improve your
English
1) make a good habit: we all have bad habits such as smoking,
drinking, sleeping in late, eating natto (joke) etc. why not
use the same power for a good thing. Create a GOOD habit!
For example:
Set an alarm to always go off at the same time everyday, sometime
when you know you're going to be home. When the alarm goes off,
stop what you're doing, and began studying!

Who are you?
Who are you? Really.
You are not your name. That was given to you by your parents.
You are not your job. It's what you DO, not what you ARE.
You are not what you own. If your belongings are taken away do
you disappear?
You are not how much money you have. If you loose all your money
do you die?
You are not your body. You body is not the same as it was last
year, last month, so how can you be something that doesn't exist?
SO I ask you again...

between coworkers
If it's the weekend two coworkers will say...
"have a good weekend"
"enjoy your weekend"
"see you Monday"
"take care."
This is not only between coworkers but also between workers and
bosses.
This may seem all very informal, but that's the way a Western
office is. A Japanese workplace is (to me at least) very formal!

See you tomorrow
In the real working world of North America, at least where I'm
from, it's very rare for someone to say that.
Actually I've been working since I was 16 and no one has ever
said that to me.
Okay that's not completely true... if I did a very good job my
boss would tell me "you did a good job today!" But it's not very
common.
Usually when a native speaker leaves their place of work they
will say:
"See you tomorrow!"
OR
"Have a good evening."
OR
And if the two coworkers are friends..
"Catch you later/tomorrow."

So I ask you...
What would you like me to teach you?
Conversational strategy?
Vocabulary?
Grammar?
Natural/slang English?

Very strange.
So we went across the road to a very interesting restaurant.
The owner of the restaurant had killed a deer and that deer was
on the menu! Very cool! He was a nice man too!
Then we drove back to my city and said goodbye and I took K
back to the station and K went back home.
I had a great time. And I look forward to meeting K again in another
couple weeks. The plan is to go to Nikko!

the only sound
Usually when a person first picks up the clarinet the only sound
that can get out of it is a sound like "EEEErrrOOWHHHHhhhHhHhSSSS FOOOOU"
To actually be able to play music the first time you pick up an
instrument is truly remarkable!
After a little while we walked down the mountain and started home.
We had planned to go to a restaurant called SAMASAMA DINING.
But to our surprise we found out that it was closed!
It looked open. All the lights were on, but the doors were locked and
the lights were out on the inside.

simple songs
We talked a lot about so many things as we hiked up the mountain.
It's nice to talk to someone that you have a lot in common with.
Then at about half the way up the mountain and stopped and I gave
K a little surprise.
I played my clarinet! I had taken it with me.
I was so surprised.. K was interested in knowing how to play the
instrument so I showed her the basics.
After about five minutes she was playing "Mary had a little lamb"
and some other
simple songs like that.

Weekend report Nagatoro
This weekend we went to Nagatoro to go hiking on Hodo san.
The first met in Kumagai and ate lunch. Gyoza! Really good!
Then after a very nice motorcycle ride to Nagatoro we arrived at
Hodo san.
As we were driving there and saw a steam train! I have been in Japan
for six years and this is the first time I've seen one of those.
Very nostalgic.

What are you thankful for?
We go through life with so many things in our lives that we
Don't really understand how lucky we are.
We have a place to sleep.
We have hot food and clean water when ever we want it.
We have jobs and people to talk to and love.
There are people in this world that have none of those things.

Asakusa
I missed an important "weekend report".
I went with my sister LynN to Asakusa on Sunday! (Ok, she's not
REALLY my sister but if I DID have a sister I would want it to
be her.)
We had lunch and talked a lot about the changes in our lives.
Then we walked around the temple a bit.
We found a few "bending" machines that sold “GATCHA” strange but funny.
Then LynN introduced me to the world of making your own accessories.
It was actually kind of interesting.
I want to go back there again and get some beads and have her teach
me how to make accessories...
NOT FOR ME! I’d like to make something for K.T.
Anyway I had a good time! Thanks LynN!

Thunderstorms
Some people like thunderstorms, other people are scared of them.
Let me tell you a story..
I was camping in Sado island last week when a BIG thunderstorm
hit the island!
I sat and watched the thunderstorm from my tent looking up at the
sky.
I saw lightning hit the water and lightning jumping from cloud to
cloud.
It was raining hard and the strong wind was talking in the trees.
I felt happy and grateful to have "front row seats" for mother natures
show.
If you where in the tent next to mine at that time, how would you have felt?
Happy? Scared? Excited?

How do you know if it's love?
Good day today.
One of my younger friends asked me tonight “how do you know if
your in love? How do you know if your in a good relationship.”
My answer was “If you can go some where (any where) and have a
good time, even simple places like shopping, walking or having
dinner/coffee and have fun… THATS a good relationship.”
And when you simply touch your "special someone" and you feel
electricity... thats love.

if you want to go
The next day I went to a few museums including the MISO museum.
I also went to a museum that had some very creepy moving statues
that told stories about legends and history of Sado Island.
My recommendation is if you want to go to Sado Island make it a weekend trip.
Or do a lot of hiking, because there isn't a lot of activities to do here.
I'll make some more detailed posts about the gold mine and a few other places on the island.

the man behind the counter
At about eight o'clock I arrive at a hotel in Oji port.
(Because when I went back to the camp ground, there where alot
of people there drinking and lighting off fireworks. I had
a feeling that they would be doing that all night!)
When I walked in to the hotel, the man behind the counter said
isn't it a bit late for you to be checking in?
It was only eight o'clock!!
Anyway I got a room, took a bath, and fell asleep so deeply that
I didn't hear my phone ringing! (Sorry K.T.)

only problem
The only problem was, I could not get to sleep.
The next day I went to see the Sado Island gold mine, drove across
the Sado sky line road, visited the TOKI zoo, went a nice Onsen
and sat on the beach and watched the sun set.
Let me just make one comment about Sado Island after dark...
everyone seems to go to sleep at around seven o'clock there is
no one out on the roads there is no one on the sidewalks and
almost all businesses are closed.
It's like a ghost town!

I found a campground(actually it was just park with a light house
in it) there were some other people camping here to.
I set up my tent, and drove around for a little bit.
And on that evening it began to rain so I returned to my tent.
At around 3:00 a.m. a thunderstorm.. actually a very large
thunderstorm moved right over my camp sight!
It rained very hard and the lightning and thunder was very loud!
It was great!!
the night. The road I drove on was very beautiful and right next
to the sea.

Vacation Report - Sado Island
On Tuesday to Thursday I went to Sago Island in Niigata.
It is a really nice place there the only problem is there is not
much to do.
It is a very very peaceful and has a lot of places for hiking
the beaches are also very beautiful.
On the first day I rode on the car ferry from Niigata port to Ryotsu port.
(SOOO many sea gulls!)

What was it like?
With this group of strangers I felt welcome and I was greeted with
smiles all around.
Some of them spoke English and those that didn’t spoke easy
Japanese to me so I could understand them. Wow. Very cool.
Thank you from deep in my heart to K.T. for giving me the GIFT of this experience.
So I put it to you readers…have you ever been to a concert? What was it like?

About the drummer
About the drummer, on stage he looked really serious but really
into the music. I saw him singing along with the lead singer but
not into the mic. This tells me that he’s just having fun!
And that’s what music is all about.
Later on
We went to an IZAKAYA. That possibly was the coolest experience
I’ve had in Japan. We went with a group of about 10 people and
I didn’t know anyone (except one)

The second band
The second band (FOOTON) was really good!
I think that if they could practice more and work on the sound
of the band they could go professional!
There were 4 members, a bassist (who was really very good)
a lead singer (who is a really cool guy to talk to)
a rhythm guitarist (who knows some really FUNKY licks) a drummer (who was really good! He must have a metronome for a heart!)

I had a GREAT Sunday!
I saw a part of Japanese culture that I have never seen before.
I went to a live concert in Koenji. This was the first time I've
ever been to a place like that.
It was small and cute (and VERY LOUD, as I write this my ears
still are ringing) but still, a nice place.
The first band was just two guys (a guitarist/singer and a drummer)
they were very very loud! At one point I actually had to cover
my ears it was SO loud that I could feel the vibrations of the
music in my chest! I know that was a little rude so I apologize, but
these are the only ears I have, and they have to keep working me
for the next 80 years and I have no replacements. Next time
I’m going to bring ear plugs.

This is a cute little personality test that I found online
I've removed all the "Make-A-Wish and it will come true" crap that was on the website that I found it.
Question one

Sakitama Koufun
We went to the Sakitama Koufun and walked about and laughed at
the Obake Daiku as the big angry gray clouds were chasing the
fluffy white clouds across the sky.
Rain again..
SO back we went to ROUND ONE. It’s a great place!
Roller bladeing, tennis, ping-pong, video games, CURLING, mini-golf, a batting cage and SO many things to do..
and then there was this bench in front of the elevators..
All and all.. a fantastic Sunday. I can’t wait till next week!
Museum and rock concert!
Quite and loud. Should be good.

another Part of Japan
We had lunch at watched at the wind blew and the rain came down,
there was a power cut for a second but it wasn’t bad.
After a great lunch (and great conversation.. I can't tell you how
nice it is to have things that both you and your partner like
doing and are interested in.) As we left we looked up in beautiful
blue (but slightly cloudy) sky and said ‘lets ride’
So we rode out on a county road that made us feel that we had been
suddenly transported to another Part of Japan!

Weekend report- Best weeked yet!
Sunday was one of the nicest days I've had this year!
If you live in Satama then you know that on Sunday we had a BIG thunderstorm come through.
The plan was to drive to Sakitama Koufun in Gyoda city by motorcycle and go on a picnic in the park there. Then go for a drive around the area and possibly go to the Kumagaya Shinrin Koen. BUT..it rained..
We both could feel the rain coming so I decided to go to ROUND ONE
in Ageo.
But as soon as we pulled into the parking lot, it started raining!!
HARD!
Perfect timing!
